From Andrew L. Mack, Ph.D.

“Scientific research is pointless if not communicated.  Although I have shared my research findings in over 50 peer-reviewed and technical publications, I feel it is important (not to mention invigorating and fun) to share my research with a broader audience.

It has been my privilege to have made in-depth and long-term ecological studies in New Guinea.   My research regarding cassowaries and seed dispersal is broadly relevant to dispersal ecology anywhere.   Our studies of speciation of New Guinea lowland birds (with Dr. Jack Dumbacher) are opening new ways of understanding speciation in New Guinea and suggest avian diversity in the region might be much higher than currently recognized.

I have worked as a conservation professional in one of the world's most diverse and ecologically intact rainforests, work that has provided a valuable perspective on what is needed for conservation efforts to succeed in Developing Nations.  This experience has fostered my desire to discuss openly what many conservationists would prefer is kept quiet - our many and often spectacular failures in conservation.

Because I have been fortunate to explore and live in pristine and remote wilderness areas, living for years in rainforest camps without power and other trappings of modern life, I enjoy sharing my adventures with audiences who might never be able to delight in these experiences themselves.”
